Google expands Search Live to 200+ countries, powered by new Gemini 3.1 Flash Live model. Voice and camera search now available in all AI Mode regions.





Google is rolling out Search Live to more than 200 countries and territories, making its conversational AI search feature available everywhere AI Mode currently operates. The expansion, announced March 26, 2026, brings real-time voice and camera-based search to users worldwide.

The global launch runs on Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, Google’s latest audio and voice model built specifically for natural conversation. Unlike previous iterations, this model handles multiple languages natively—users can speak with Search in their preferred language without switching settings.

How Search Live Actually Works

Search Live targets scenarios where typing feels clunky. Open the Google app on Android or iOS, tap the Live icon below the search bar, and start talking. The system responds with audio, then keeps the conversation going as you ask follow-ups. Web links surface when you want to dig deeper.

The camera integration is where things get interesting. Point your phone at something—say, a shelving unit you’re trying to assemble—and Search sees what you see. It can walk you through installation steps while pulling relevant web resources. This builds directly on Google Lens functionality, but adds the back-and-forth dialogue layer.

Users already in Lens can tap the Live option to shift into conversational mode without leaving the camera view.

The Bigger Picture

Search Live first appeared in the U.S. back in September 2024, when Google initially demonstrated the Gemini-powered tool’s ability to process visual information through phone cameras. The global expansion represents a significant infrastructure commitment—supporting real-time audio AI across every language where AI Mode runs isn’t trivial.

For publishers, the trend toward conversational search continues raising questions about organic traffic. When users get answers through dialogue rather than clicking through to websites, the traditional search referral model shifts. Google’s inclusion of web links within Search Live responses appears designed to address this, though how much traffic actually flows through remains to be seen.

The feature works on both major mobile platforms, requiring only the standard Google app. No separate download needed—just an update to access the Live icon.
